More good news for Ford Motor Company: Their hot selling Ford Fusion sedan is in the top ten best sellers list for cars this year. Given the recent domination of that list by cars like Toyota's Camry, this is pretty big, and pretty good, news, although is used to be par for the course for Ford not that long ago.

Ford cars and trucks used to dominate the list of the top 10 vehicles sold in the U.S. Their F-Series pickup truck was always number one, and you'd always see things like Ford's Taurus, Explorer, Ranger, Focus and Escort scattered on the list was well. And that was as recently as 2001.

But 2001 was a long time ago, and the intervening eight years haven't exactly been kind to the Blue Oval brand. Ford hopes that the tide may be changing for 2009, though, as the boys from Dearborn, has seen its market share rise steadily even in a seriously down auto market.

The car most likely responsible for Ford's upswing in down times is their 2010 Fusion sedan. The redesigned 2010 Fusion sedan provides best-in-class fuel economy, an hybrid option that is only bested by the Prius, MPG-wise, a Sport model and all the bells and whistles that car customers, circa 2010, have come to expect.

With all this going for it, Fusions have been selling quite well, thank you, and the latest redesign has already outshined the Fusions' all-time best sales year of 2007 by nearly 2,000 units. And with sales like this, the Fusion has vaulted onto the top 10 list for vehicles sold in the U.S. On top of that, the Fusion is the best-selling domestic car in the U.S., not including trucks.

After five years on the market it looks like the Fusion is in the groove, but all in all, it has a ways to go before catching its Japanese competition. For example, Toyota's Camry has nearly double the Fusion's year-to-date sales of 151,000 units. The Honda Accord? It's nipping at the Camry's heals, and even the Nissan Altima is in front of the Fusion by almost 18,000 units.

But at least it's a start ...
