Fortnite Is Now A Racing Game, Apparently

It’s hard to remember, but there was a time before Fortnite was a thing. Initially introduced as a humble zombie slaying, fort-building survival game, the move to a Battle Royale format in 2017 was just the start of an all-consuming metaverse. Now, it’s a racing game. Seriously.

Welcome, then, Rocket Racing. It’s a game in its own right (albeit one that has to be launched through Fortnite), developed by Psyonix - the brains behind everyone’s favourite car football title Rocket League.

Details on what the game will entail are pretty scarce at this point. There’s a cinematic trailer showcased at last night’s Game Awards that gives a hint as to how the game will play. By the looks of things, it’ll blend Mario Kart-style arcade kart physics with Rocket League’s aerial-heavy, rocket-propelled style of play. The jury is out on whether or not we can spam “What a save!” in the chat, though

The Rocket League influence looks to spread to the car list, too. The Octane - pretty much the face of virtual car football - is in alongside an unnamed new car. Psyonix has confirmed a small selection of cars and cosmetics in the existing game can be carried over to Rocket Racing, with more of its huge roster on the way in the future, though exact details are watertight for the moment.

Screenshots have emerged showing the Lamborghini Huracan STO in-game, so expect multitudes of real-world cars to crop up over the coming months and years.

We won’t have to wait long at all to find out exactly what Rocket Racing has in store. The mode will come as a free add-on for Fortnite later today, 8 December. There’s every chance we’re on the track by the time you’re reading this.
