Last week, Dodge delighted fans of brilliantly absurd horsepower outputs by announcing the new Challenger Hellcat Redeye. It has a mighty 786bhp (or a much neater 797hp) on tap from a lightly detuned Demon engine, but we now know it’ll be quite a bit cheaper than its drag strip-focused brethren. Nearly $14,000 cheaper, in fact.

You’re looking at $69,650 for the supercharged V8 hero, of if you’d prefer, $87 per horsepower. Not bad, right? Although you will need to add a $1700 Gas Guzzler Tax charge to that, plus the destination fee.

According to Torque News, options include 305mm performance tyres for $695, a 3.09 rear gear for £1095, Alcantara interior trim for $1795, and much more besides. Oh, and you can make it into a widebody Challenger for $6000. In other words, get carried away, and you’ll soon be able to vastly inflate that $69,650 base price.

The rear-wheel drive SXT meanwhile - the entry point of the tweaked range - will set you back $27,295. The R/T Scat Pack - the tempting middle-ground in Challenger land - is $38,995. If you’re happy to make do with the ‘regular’ Hellcat, we’ve good news: it’s had a 10bhp bump in power, and at $58,650, it’s $5000 cheaper than before.

It’s a good time to be a muscle car fan…
