Chris Harris And Eddie Jordan Escape Huge Fire During Top Gear Filming

Chris Harris, Eddie Jordan, an Alpine A110 and a stage of the Monte Carlo Rally. It has the makings of an awesome Top Gear feature, doesn’t it? Sadly though, filming of this very segment at the weekend went south thanks to a huge fire that occurred during SS17 of the event.

Shortly after an engine management light appeared on the dashboard, the pair were told of flames appearing under the vehicle. Thankfully, both stars escaped without injury, but by the time fire crews arrived, it was too late to save the car.

“I first realised I needed to get out when I opened the door and the flames went up my arm,” Harris said of the incident on Topgear.com, adding, “Sadly the car was lost and it always makes me sad to see a beautiful car destroyed.”

“Doing a stage of the Monte Carlo Rally was a dream come true for me,” Jordan said, meanwhile. “The car was stunning - so light on its toes. It was dancing around the mountain and Chris was driving it beautifully. It’s such a shame we didn’t finish the test, but these things happen,” he added.

As to what caused the pre-production Alpine to catch fire, we don’t yet know. The blaze is currently under investigation.

Either it is the engine not being able to handle 252hp,
Or it was badly maintained even though new
Or something messed up the fuel lines or damaged the fuel tank…
I don’t belive the car would’ve caught on fire unless it was thrown around (driven) too hard, not well maintained or it was just some design/engineering flaw…

Could it also be due to electronics issues as well?

Chris Harris - ‘it always makes me sad to see a beautiful car destroyed’
Richard Hammond - ‘I will now do a rally jump in a fifty-year old Jaguar MK10, utterly destroying it’
