Bike enthusiasts of a certain age will go weak at the knees at the mere mention of two-stroke, 250cc sports bikes. The heyday for these light, noisy and smoky beasts has long since passed, but there is hope in the form of this: the Vins Duecinquanta.

It sounds like a fictional vehicle from GTA V (Duecinquanta is Italian for two-fifty, if you’re curious), but it’s actually an exquisitely-made, modern two-stroke 250cc sports bike dreamed up by a bunch of ex-Ferrari Formula 1 engineers. And it’ll be outrageously quick.

The Competizione track version produces around 80bhp from a slightly larger 288cc V-twin, and thanks to the extensive use of carbonfibre in its construction, it weighs about 85kg. Nope, that’s not a typo.

The road-going version will be heavier, tipping the scales at just under 100kg. A power figure for that hasn’t been revealed yet, presumably because it hasn’t been homologated yet. It uses direct fuel injection in a bid to pass Euro4 emissions regulations.

If you’re thinking a low-volume motorbike with a carbonfibre frame, wheels and forks is going to be expensive, you’d be right. The Competizione is €50,000, while the road bike is €40,000. Ouch.
