Volkswagen Is Building Two Rear-Driven Electric SUVs For 2020
Volkswagen is going to launch two new rear-wheel drive SUVs as soon as 2020, according to reports.
Auto Express quotes Volkswagen’s head of design, Klaus Bischoff, as saying that one will be a conventional SUV and the other will be a more rakish design based on the I.D. Crozz concept (pictured in red) first seen a few months ago.
Both will be offered first in a rear-wheel drive layout, which, for the same reasons front-wheel drive was introduced at all, is for packaging reasons rather than to go after lairy oversteer. Both will also get higher-performance versions with over 300bhp thanks to a larger motor on the rear axle and a second, smaller one at the front wheels.
Driving range is predicted to be around or above 300 miles per charge, and yes, they’ll be heavy. Strides have been made in recent years, but we’re not expecting miracles.
It had been rumoured that the I.D. Crozz concept could make production, but this is the first time we have any sort of official confirmation that the project has a green light. It also stresses the importance of SUVs to the modern car maker’s bottom line.
The two SUVs will follow the production version of the I.D. hatchback (above), which is due in 2019.
