These 800whp Huracan Vs 720S Races Should Not Be So Close

With each running around 800hp to the wheels, these two tuned Lamborghini Huracans should have no trouble beating a McLaren 720S...

The two Lamborghini Huracans in this video are stupidly quick cars. One’s an LP610-4 with a twin-turbo system, and the other is an LP580-2 with a VF supercharger kit. Both put down around 800hp to the wheels, so both should be able to best a McLaren 720S in a straight line.

But, these drag races go a different way. Watch the video above, and you’ll see what we mean. Conclusion? The 720S is outrageously fast.

It’s partly down to a conservative power figure. A couple of weeks ago we saw this same 720S put down 691hp to the wheels on a dyno run, equating to around 770hp at the crank. Yep, 50hp more than it should make.

But, that’s still less than the modified Huracans, and weight is fairly similar, so we’re still not sure what kind of voodoo magic is going on with the 720S. Could it just be down to aero?

If the top video wasn’t enough proof of the car’s spectacular straight-line performance for one day, above you’ll see another video from the same channel, showing the 720S making a Huracan Performante look a tad sluggish…

I live right by that highway. Used it to practice driving stick.

I think it really comes down to two things. First, the McLaren is about 300lbs lighter than the Lambo based on magazine scales, test weight for the 720s is around 3,150lbs, 4wd Huracan is around 3,450lbs. Then figure that the twin turbo kit from Tampa Autosports probably adds 100lbs give or take with it’s double air-to-water coolers, turbos, piping and heat exchangers. So let’s say 400lbs more, which is a 12.6% weight advantage for the McLaren.
Second, the transmission on the McLaren is doing a better job keeping power flowing continuously and the Huracan loses ground with each shift.
I have no doubt the Huracan is putting down more power to the wheels but it’s close enough that a 12% weight difference means they are almost the same. I do think the Huracan had more top end pull but the broad HP peak of the 720s engine, better shifting gearbox, and what looks like a slight aero advantage near the end of the run add up to a win for the boys from the UK.

720s engine is an unbelievable beast from the future. The team at Ricardo that developed it must be space aliens or something.

That f*ing transmission in 720s…
It’s pulling away strongly while the Huracan shifts. And I reckon that is also the reason behind the surprisingly high dyno test result.

Not really that much of a wonder concerning all numbers including weight - and i’d actually say drag- , our new info on the 720s’s actual output and the fact that a “tuned” engine isn’t something engineered to work with the specific parts used, leading to bigger lag etc. And the lambo’s electronics are made to work with a less powerful, instantly reacting NA engine.
