Is The Alfa Romeo Giulia About To Get A 345bhp Inline-Four?

Right now, if you want a fast Alfa Romeo Giulia, you have two choices: you go for the full fat, 500bhp Quadriofoglio, or the 276bhp Veloce. Opt for the latter, inline-four-powered machine and you’re looking at a car with only a little more than half the power, but there may be a more powerful version in the works.

A 345bhp 2.0-litre petrol variant has appeared on FCA’s Mopar Tech Authority service information site, alongside the existing 276bhp 2.0-litre, the 2.9-litre Quadrifoglio and the 2.2-litre diesel. So what’s going on?

Alfa Romeo USA told Car and Driver that there were “no plans for any other engines for Giulia in North America for 2018 model year besides the 2.0-litre and 2.9-litre [petrol] versions,” although nothing was mentioned about the 2019 model year.

As far as the UK goes, we’re not yet sure - we’ve contacted the UK arm of the company to see if a more powerful 2.0-litre can be confirmed or denied. We’re hoping it does happen - the 276bhp Giulia already manages 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, so cranking up the power to 345bhp would result in a potent little brother for the Quadrifoglio.
