Volkswagen UK Has Killed The Jetta And We Might Not See It Again

Volkswagen's Golf-based saloon was its slowest-selling car by far in the UK, so the company has halted imports with a decision pending on whether to take its replacement at all
Volkswagen UK Has Killed The Jetta And We Might Not See It Again

Volkswagen UK has scrubbed the Jetta saloon from its lineup, just a month after the company stopped producing the Scirocco at all.

The market for saloons in the UK has been decreasing for decades, leaving only a few pockets where premium cars need to have the traditional old-fashioned boot. The Jetta, effectively a less practical Golf, was always living on borrowed time.

What’s more, the model seems to have disappeared from the German site, too, while the brand prepares to launch a replacement.

In the UK, the Scirocco sold in 10 times the number of the Jetta, showing how low demand really was. In numbers that’s just 379 cars to the end of last month. In the same time period VW UK shifted 5398 Passat saloons and 52,722 Golfs.

A new version is coming next year, but it’s not yet clear whether it will come to these shores. With sales figures like that, what would be the point?

There are three advantages to the Jetta over the Golf.
1) It has more cargo space.
2) It has a lower insurance category than the Golf, so it’s cheaper and you get more car.
3) It wouldn’t get stolen, as who the hell would steal a Jetta.

1) The cargo space is far less usable. Overall, you’d fit less in a Jetta.
2) Jetta has a higher insurance group. The Jetta Ranges from 11 to 23. The Golf from 7 to 20.
3) Exactly why its being axed.

I don’t see why they don’t make a hatch version of the jetta. Maybe too similar to the golf? Either way not everyone wants a saloon as big as a passat.

Ironically the jetta in its entire life time (1979 - present) has sold more than any other VW vehicle. Such a shame its now gone from UK shores 😭

As a VW Bora owner, I saw this coming. As mentioned early-on in the article, it’s only really premium saloons that exist now. The game’s changed, and VW didn’t do anything to liven up the latest Jettas.

If nobody bought them, it obviously wasn’t a substantial loss to the car community.

Oh well.

You could just get a Passat or the new Areton. Why is everyone acting like this is some major disappoint. The car was dull.
