Don't Expect Alfa Romeo's BMW 5-Series Rival Any Time Soon

There’s been a recurring theme with Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited rebirth: delays. Both the Giulia and Stelvio launched much later than expected, and we’re still not entirely sure when the hot Stelvio Quadrifoglio will arrive in showrooms.

The latest delay? That involves a larger version of the Giulia, intended to rival the BMW 5-series. It was initially expected to go on sale in 2018, but it actually won’t be here until 2021. Yep, three years later than previously thought, according to the latest report from Automotive News.

When it does eventually arrive, we can expect it to sit on the Giulia’s all-new, rear-wheel drive ‘Giorgio’ platform. The 3-series rival’s engine line-up will be largely carried over to the larger car, and yes, that should include the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, perhaps with a little more power squeezed out to give the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 something to think about.
