Every All-New Jaguar And Land Rover Will Have Electrified Options From 2020

Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed that every new model launched from 2020 will have a hybrid or electric power option.

Rather than promising to only sell hybrid or electric cars, the move just cements a place for an electrified model in every model range in the JLR portfolio, including the Discovery Sport and XE; the brands’ two smallest models. Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer, said:

“Every new Jaguar Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving our customers even more choice. We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles. Our first fully electric performance SUV, the Jaguar I-Pace, goes on sale next year.”

To mark the occasion, Jaguar has revealed three one-off electric cars, representing the past, present and future. Let’s start with the rather lovely E-Type Zero in the video above. Based on a 1968 Series 1.5 Roadster, but with the old drivetrain switched out in favour of one of JLR’s current battery-fed setups, the classic sports car will now hit 60mph in a very respectable 5.5 seconds.

The I-Pace sticks its oar in for the present. Designed from the ground up as an electric SUV, the stunning-looking thing makes good use of the inherent differences in packaging in electric cars without going all weird and oddball in its design. The car, as you see it at the top of this page, will be on sale to the public next year.

Finally, there’s the Jaguar Future-Type, which strikes another blow for the company’s excellent naming division. It’s meant to be a vision of how the car could look in 2040 and beyond. It’s a fully-autonomous concept that can adjust its interior environment to suit whether you want to work, play, socialise or just sit staring at your social media apps.

A slightly Skynet feature is the ‘intelligent steering wheel that will revolutionise the way you live your life.’ Called Sayer, after Malcolm Sayer, who designed the E-Type, it detaches from the car and ‘lives in your home and becomes your trusted companion.’ Sounds pretty damn creepy, if you ask us.

When in the house it functions like a more advanced Amazon Echo or Google Home, constantly listening to what you’re up to, answering your questions, giving you the news, monitoring the contents of your fridge, ordering you a taxi and more, gaining an unprecedented insight into your private life. We’ll probably pass, thanks.
