McLaren Really Is Planning An All-Electric Hypercar
McLaren is definitely going to build an all-electric hypercar that could potentially succeed project P15 (pictured below), according to Autocar.
An electric Ultimate Series car was rumoured a year ago, long after the P1 had ceased production, but according to Autocar that project was just a test bed for new battery technology – the same technology that will be sold to all Formula E teams from next year in order to make the race machines last a whole race without drivers needing to change cars.
Now we’re led to believe that McLaren will use its clever new battery tech to power what would be a flagship forward-looking spaceship of a car, with one eye on matching the 675LT’s incredible performance and the other eye on the future. As we know, not even AMG will keep selling V8s forever.
It won’t be coming any time soon, though: the hybrid revolution will come first, with the electrified cars that will replace the current Sports and Super Series cars arriving in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Before that there’s the car codenamed BP23, which is even closer to reality with production set for next year. The P15 should break cover within months, so as we type this McLaren is probably busy selling every last one in advance…
