LED Headlights For '330bhp' Toyota Supra Revealed
As the debut of the all-new Toyota Supra draws nearer, the test mules that are out in the wild are shedding their disguises and giving us a better idea of how the car will look. The latest development? That concerns headlights, as a prototype has been spotted wearing production clusters for the first time.
As we can see from some detailed snaps over at SupraMkV.com, they look to be snazzy LED units, and echo the design of the FT-1 concept’s front headlights (below).
However, that’s not the only interesting nugget of news found over on the MkV Supra portal - thanks to a leaked BMW model codes document, we now know how powerful it’ll be. Both the new BMW Z4 (code G29) and the new Supra (code J29) are listed on the document, with the Supra getting two choices of engine: ‘30i’ and ‘40i’. In BMW engine speak, that’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, and a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six. The current iterations of each produce 248bhp and 330bhp respectively.
So, if the engines are no more powerful than the current versions, that means the most powerful Supra will ‘only’ make 330bhp. In these power obsessed times that may not seem like much, but we reckon it might be just about on the money.
What’s perhaps more interesting is there’s no mention of the rumoured all-wheel drive hybrid model, although - assuming the document is legitimate - one could come along later in the Supra’s life.
The other intriguing takeaway is that while the information seems to confirm that the Supra will indeed only be available as an automatic, the BMW - weirdly - gets a manual option.
Time will tell if all this is correct, but for now, we want to know: do you think 330bhp is enough for the new Supra?

I couldn’t care less if the new supra has a 3jz or not, actually I’ve never been a huge fan of the supra. What I find disappointing is that, the last Supra was already from the factory a supercar beater, much like the GTR R35 and the new NSX are today. The new Supra won’t be (it’s not the only one, back in the 90’s the 300zx and the RX7 also had supercar performances, the 370Z and the RX8 don’t…) and that is disappointing.
Thing is BMWs smaller cars have really good power to weight.
The M3 has 420hp and hits 0-60 in 4.1 seconds.
The V8 C63 non s variant has around 460 and hits 4.0.
If this Supra is being co developed with BMW then expect 330hp to be enough.

The new Supra looks similarly layed out to all the Supras of the past, and they were heavy and stock didn’t handle very well compared to say an RX7 FD or an NSX.
The old supra was about straight line performance though. It could not keep up with RX-7, NSX, R34, and STI in the corner without modifications. It would be very nice if this new Supra can have good handling, but to be able to live with its old image, it gotta put up a good fight in the straight line.
You can’t really compare Supra heritage with AE86. They’re designed for different purpose. I understand that Toyota want to have some fun car again, but I don’t think all of these people miss the point (a few or more just want straight up power). They’re just referencing it to what it was compare to other competitors in its era/class.
I think Toyota may have nailed it. They don’t look like theyre going to make the mistake that other manufacturers have in making new versions of once affordable sports cars out of reach for most people. Honda did that with the nsx. It doesnt look like Toyota will do that, and I’m ecstatic
