The Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s UK pricing has been announced, with the entry price undercutting the BMW X3 by £855.

Four trim grades are available right now, including a special Milano Edizione that won’t be around for long. The entry-level Stelvio has no trim name as such, being known only as Stelvio, but we’ll call it the base grade. Super, Speciale and Milano Edizione complete the range.

The base-model Stelvio will cost £33,990, for which you get a 177bhp diesel engine and tiny-looking 17-inch wheels. You do get dual-zone climate control, selectable driving modes and plenty of technology including four USB ports, but seriously, you will need to spec-up those wheels.

Super models add 18-inch wheels (still not large enough to look right), front parking sensors to add to the existing rears, and a two-tone leather-covered dashboard. Speciale has 19-inch wheels, red brake calipers, bi-xenon headlights and heated leather upholstery. Milano Edizione cars get special sports seats in leather, 20-inch wheels, keyless entry and more.

Base and Super models are rear-wheel drive in 177bhp diesel guise, with all others blessed with intelligent all-wheel drive as standard. Speciale and Milano Edizione models get the more powerful 207bhp diesel and 276bhp petrol. The 207bhp diesel also features on the Super grade.

Buyers will find the 197bhp turbocharged petrol available for a £700 surcharge over the rear-driven diesels at base and Super levels because it comes with all-wheel drive, but it’s £800 cheaper than the all-wheel drive diesel at Super spec.

At the top end of the range the four-cylinder 207bhp diesels struggle to compete with the cheaper six-pot BMW diesels in the X3, with a 254bhp X3 xDrive30d xLine almost £1000 cheaper than the diesel Stelvio Milano Edizione, but Alfa Romeo badge appeal will likely count for something. It’s also way, way cheaper than the latest Audi Q5.
