This Nasty-Looking Crash Punishes A Cyclist For Running A Red Light

Thankfully the rider looks to be okay after being T-boned by a car at a crossing, but there’s no question whose fault it is…

We don’t necessarily have anything against cyling; only cyclists who don’t abide by the rules. This man in the Canadian city of Ottowa found out the hard way what happens when you flout the law.

Approaching from the left of shot, the rider flies out into the road at 90 degrees to the oncoming traffic, running a red light. The camera car, the driver of which was just trying out their new dash-cam for the first time, sees the bare-headed rider coming and slows to avoid a crash, but the unsighted driver on the right doesn’t. The impact sends the twisted bike flying to the opposite pavement while the cyclist picks himself up off the road, apparently not hurt too badly.

Via the description beneath the YouTube video upload, the driver implies that the footage should help the family in the car that hit the bike to sort any blame issues out once and for all.

It has finally begun ….the war on cyclists, once a single drop of cyclist blood has been spilled the bloodshed shall not finish until all cyclists are finished…..beware cyclists

I’ve been hit before, not fun. Take it from me, you can wait the extra minute between lights. Nothing is more important than your life.

Everyone who supports violence against cyclists should ride on forever for their life and not touch a car ever.

its fault of some scumbags who think they are better than god, drive their bike like idiots and dont think some elementary rules apply to them, also. this gives a bad reputation to people who make their best to dont annoy anyone and can only afford a bike or a scooter. its the same for bikers, some drive like crap and ithers are more respectful than the average car driver. i hope this guy learnt that he drives abike, he must respect crucial trafic signs, and pay more attention to the drivers in its surroundings. i dont say that its motorists fault or bikes fault. i just want to say that both of them have to be careful and concentrated on what they are doing.

Ottowa? Really… Do you guys not have spell check or common sense, the video title even has the correct spelling of the city. It’s not like it’s the capital of Canada or anything.

This cyclist was breaking more than one law, from the look of the video. In the province of Ontario (where Ottawa is, for those who may not know) bicycles are considered vehicles, and it is illegal to ride hem on the sidewalk, or on pedestrian crossings. Quoted from the Ottawa Police Service website:

Bicycles are vehicles and cyclists have the same rights and duties as motorists!

Ontario Highway Traffic Act and the Ottawa Traffic and Parking Bylaw require the the following:

“Stop at all stop signs and red lights.
Signal all lane changes, turns and stops.
Drive/ride on the right side of the road.Share the Road
Drive/ride only in the designated direction on one-way streets.
It is unsafe and illegal to ride on the sidewalk.
Share the road with other users.
Use lights when driving/riding at night.
Have a bell or horn on your bike.
Cyclists wear a helmet (required if under 18 years old), drivers wear a seatbelt.
Cyclists use proper hand signalling when turning and stopping.”

I hope this cyclist is not seriously hurt, I don’t wish ill on anyone, but he did just about EVERYTHING wrong, and has some fines coming his way. If you don’t obey the rules of the road, you can’t expect other road users to be able to anticipate what you are going to do, and where you are going to be. This is the result.
