France Wants To Ban The Sale Of All Petrol And Diesel Cars By 2040

If you buy a new car in France in 23 year’s time, it’s highly likely you won’t have the option of anything with an internal combustion engine. Why? Because the French government announced on Thursday that it’s to ban the sale of all petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

The move is part of the country’s wide ranging plans to help meet targets set out by the Paris climate accord. In addition to the 2040 ban, owners of diesel cars made before 1997 and petrols build before 2001 will soon be offered financial incentives to scrap their cars.

The French government will provide financial support to private companies to help meet its aims, and has also announced its intention to stop using coal-fired power stations by 2022.

The declaration came a day after [Volvo said(https://www.carthrottle.com/post/every-all-new-volvo-will-be-hybrid-or-electric-from-2019/)] that by 2019 all of its new cars will be hybrid or electric, and follows similar calls from Norway and the Netherlands to have new petrol and diesel cars taken off sale by 2025. Last year there were also suggestions from senior German politicians for a 2030 ban in the country.

Our own UK government meanwhile pledged to ban petrol and diesel cars entirely by 2050 in the 2017 Conservative Party election manifesto, with exceptions expected to be made for classic cars.

Well… This won’t pass easily in France since we’re maybe too conservative people will probably start yelling about it when they’ll hear about it and this will probably at least delay it

incentives to scraP?? how will that help the environment. Thats a waste of good cars and making new cars for all those people might pollute a lot more than allowing people to keep their cars for a little longer. Why is it set to 2001 for petrol cars and diesel lower than that? shouldn’t it be the other way around? also it has been shown that many newer cars pollute more than the older ones if they aren’t operated in perfect test environment conditions so all this is just another load of political ….. bio-waste. Making life harder for poor people by making everyone who can afford it scrap their car and get a new one, draining the used cars market and driving prices up of the leftover cars.

Scrapping the cars is the worst they could do to the environment. How about giving them away or exporting them to lesser developed countries so they get to replace their really polluting cars with more modern used ones from france? politicians don’t give a .. about the environment otherwise they would not decide irrational … like this.

look they could just fx decide from now on all older cars can no longer be registered in this country. So effectively nobody who buys one can use it. This means all the used cars would be exported, dealerships would be able to make a little profit, the cars would end up in countries with likely a lot even older cars that pollute far more than the french used cars do. It would be a much better win for the environment. Wrecking a car and melting and recycling also takes a lot of energy. Its a really bad move. Why do politicians again and again make choices, that I or anyone mildly intelligent being could find better solutions for in a fraction of the time?
