The US Wants To Massively Reduce German Car Imports

Donald Trump wants to massively cut the number of German cars being sold in America, according to reports in German media.

In a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk, where journalists were present, the American President is quoted as saying:

“The Germans are bad, very bad. See the millions of cars they are selling in the US. Terrible. We will stop this.”

Several German newspapers have reported the quotes, along with suggesting that the current American government ‘still doesn’t understand’ that the EU is unable to renegotiate trade deals on a country-by-country basis.

President Trump has previously said that he would tax German manufacturers an additional 35 per cent if they wanted to sell cars in the US, making them vastly more expensive than any American rivals.

We can’t imagine that VAG, BMW Group and Mercedes are too pleased at the idea, but ultimately it could be counter-productive for America anyway if the wealthy German companies invest in jobs elsewhere instead. We have to wonder how Trump might like the sound of billions of dollars being pumped into China instead of the US, but hey, we’re not politicians.

As soon as a law like that is passed, South-Canadians are going to buy as many German cars as they possibly can, before the become more expensive, boosting the German industry on short notice. Also the used German cars are going to rise high in value making it profitable for German manufacturers to sell new cars even on a high price.
Does he ever think something through?

I know right?! Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Subaru, Nissan are all killing it. Kia and Hyundai are growing fast. Sounds like he must have a grudge against Germany.

…and just like that, UK market share suddenly means a lot more to the Germans. This may help our Brexit deal.

So then, why don’t you buy a German car in Canada and then move it over to the U.S.. Or, your friend buys the German car in Canada, drives it over to the U.S., sells it to you (as used), and you both have fun.

I don’t even buy German cars, but this makes me mad. Don’t mess with free market. Fair and free trade is the way it should be. Europe could always put a tarrif on American imports too to hurt us back. No one wins.

This guy is changing the laws of the most influential country for is own personal bloody gains. If he manages to make this tax increase happen, us Germans are just going to f*ck off out of the US. Not completely, but we’ll care a lot less.

He calls himself a “Republican” but this kind of reform is borderline communist.
Globalization is basically the Americanization of the world. The US is home to the biggest companies in the world which operate internationally. The US economy wouldn’t be nearly as strong as it is without globalization. Protectionism is a dumb idea in itself but in the United States it’s shooting yourself in the foot, stopping what makes you strong.
