Tesla is probably the biggest name in the world of electric motoring, but its biggest challenge is yet to come - the mass-production car.

It’s been successfully shifting the expensive Model S and Model X for a while, with a Tesla taking over the crown of eco-friendly status symbol among the well-to-do. A car that packs the same tech into a more affordable package is a tougher nut to crack.

This Model 3 has been in the works for a little while now, unveiled in March 2016, and much of the key data has been under wraps until now.

This chart, posted by a Tesla source to the Model 3 Owners Club forum, shows the final specifications for the 3. Unusually it also shows that the 3 is the worse car in every area when compared to its Model S sibling.

It might seem odd, but it looks to be part of an ‘anti-selling’ tactic. Tesla recently noted that customers are waiting for the Model 3 to come along and costing it sales of the Model S, so the brand is making it crystal clear that the 3 isn’t half the car that the Model S is.

Indeed the graphic tells us that the Model S is twice as quick and twice as roomy as the Model 3. 0-60mph takes 5.6 seconds for the budget Tesla, and the range is down to 215 miles or so, compared to over 300 for the S.

Inside the 3 is strictly a five-seater, so no trick rear-facing seats here, and can only store 14 cubic feet of stuff - that’s around 400 litres.

Most notable of all is the warning that customers can expect an entire year on a waiting list when the Model 3 eventually launches.
