Christian Von Koenigsegg Says His Spyker-Bound Engine Will Last

Koenigsegg has a knack for building engines with bonkers four figure outputs. So what happens when it puts together a naturally-aspirated V8 with a much more ‘modest’ 592bhp, as it has done for Spyker? It’ll be incredibly strong and reliable, says Christian von Koenigsegg.

Speaking to Road and Track at the Geneva Motor Show, he said: “It’s over-engineered for their needs, because the structure can take 1500 horsepower and they’re having 600…our engines are bulletproof with 1360 horsepower, our customers don’t kill engines, so that engine will last for I don’t know…200 years or something.”

Clearly von Koenisegg is exaggerating a tad, but it shows how confident he is in the engines his company will supply to the Dutch supercar maker. It should be quite an engine, too: peak power comes in at 8000rpm, and the dry-sumped unit is good for 443lb ft of torque. It replaces the old 4.2-litre Audi V8 Spyker had been using with a supercharger attached.

The new 5.0-litre Koenigsegg-sourced engine will appear in the C8 Preliator (above), which is limited to just 100 units. The last few years for Spyker have been decidedly rocky, so it’s good to see them back.

With proper care I don’t think it’s that unreasonable to think a car can last 200 years. There are instances of cars and trucks around 100 years old that fire right up again. Though they are much simpler

I don’t think he’d be exaggerating much at all. Take a look at how well lathes have lasted for 150 years or more.

What that means is so many kilos of material could have been removed from that engine to save weight without compromising reliability. Who wants a engine to last 200 if the car is not gonna last quarter of that..and it is not a big deal even if you had to rebuild every..let’s say 50 years. I don’t think we can call it Overkill or over engineered, it is just inappropriate for a modern day sports car.
