The drip feed of information from Mercedes-AMG regarding its new hypercar continues, with the near 1000bhp machine receiving a name at the Detroit Auto Show.

The name in question? Project One. Not terribly imaginative, so we can’t help but wonder if that’s a codename. Don’t be surprised if it’s called something else by the time it’s fully revealed.

Mercedes-AMG has also revealed that the Project One will be all-wheel drive, stating: “The highly efficient and powerful Formula One World Champion drivetrain accompanied by a purely electric and wheel selective front axle drive concept.” Sounds a lot like the rear axle will be powered by the engine and the front wheels by electric motors, much like the drivetrains of the Porsche 918 Spyder and Honda NSX.

The power output has now been confirmed as 1000hp (986bhp), and the chatter from Detroit suggests it’ll even have an electric only mode giving up to 16 miles of range.

We’re looking at around 200 - 300 examples being built, which will no doubt be snapped up via quickly. As far as a price goes, expect somewhere very far north of £1 million a pop…

More like an M5 engine, those big V12 limousine engines are huge, but they’re too soft for a sports car
