Have you ever driven in winter? What you need is ground clearance. Also it doesnt mean you have to have steelies. And that roof rack basket would be totally impractical, it would get filled with snow and ice and would make it a pain in the ass to remove the snow from your roof…

If you’re gonna have separate sets of tires for winter and the rest of the year, might as well put the winter ones on cheap wheels, keep your good ones in top shape :D
