Here is my contribution to #realcar . So this my VW Golf Mk2 and here is the whole story.

It all began this summer when me and my friend bought a Golf mk2(pictured below on a tow truck), for a 2000 kilometre long road trip across Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro. The preparations for the trip went well I did a service on that car, changed the tires and it was all going well.

The preparations for the trip went well I did a service on that car, changed the tires and it was all going well. But unfortunetly our belowed golf blew his transsmision on the first day, so it was time for plan B, and we continued our trip with my other car a Škoda Fabia.

But despite letting me down, in fact until now it was the only car that has died on me and I had owned many crappy cars, It was a nice car but we ended up selling it. But when we returned from our trip, everyone were very exited and wanted to try this kind of trip, so we got an Idea for next year to drive on simillar roads, but with cars that are at least 25 years old or older, so that is how an idea for a OLDSCHOOL BALKAN TRIP began.

So thats got me looking for a cheap project car wich was older than 25 years and was easy to work on. And that is how I ended up again with a Golf mk2. Its made the same year as the grey one, Its also made in TAS, the only difference is that previous Golf was a petrol this one is a diesel.

To start here are some specs. It powered by a 1.6 litre naturaly aspirated diesel with 54ish horsepower, mated to a 5 speed gearbox. It weights arround a tonne and has a 0-100 time of….. hmmm very long but it gets there. Top speed is supposed to be 143 km/h, if you have the balls to go that fast with such a car. Only equipment that it has is a radio with a cassette player. It hasnt got any modern drivers aids such as ABS, power steering, its just you and the car. The fun part is the consumption, it doesnt matter if you going pedal to the metal or just crussing arround, it will burn just 5L/100km. It might sound slow but its still very fun to drive.

Just a nice wash and it looked way better.

So my plans with this car are to first do a service, wich I did sort of, I changed the timing belt, glow plugs, cleand out the cooling sistem, got a new thermostat, and sorted out some leaking hoses. I still have to change the oil in transmission and engine but that is gonna get sorted next week.

Changing the thermostat and ended up taking the whole front end apart.

So for the tunning part

Changed the awful original steering wheel for a GTI one.

So as you seen above the first thing that I changed was the original steering wheel. And because all 4 shock absorbers are worn out it will get coilowers a little bit earlyer than planned. It will also get some decend wheels soon. That is about it for #realtuning for now.

It will also get some rust sorted out and some other mechanical stuff.

So that is my budged project car. I hope you enjoyed reading. And if any of you CTzens is interested in joining our OLDSCHOOL BALKAN TRIP you are welcome to join (If there will be enough interasted for this trip, I will write a #blogpost about the planned trip), as long as you will participate with a car wich is 25years old or older. And for the end I wish you all a merry christmas.

Cherokee

Nice read. I has the same as my fist car, but 4 door version. Mine was the 1,6 turbo diesel version. If I remember well it had arround 60 hp. Not the fastest car, but nice to drive and as you already wrote, it got a very nice fuel mileage.
