It's Official: Speed Bumps Are Terrible For The Environment And Need To Die

Most of us probably consider speed bumps to be a nuisance, and at worst something which can cause a fair bit of damage to certain kinds of car. Stancers, and people who daily track cars, I’m looking at you. However, they’re even more evil than we might have otherwise thought.

According to the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), speed bumps either need to be completely redesigned from their current forms, or be removed entirely to promote smoother, more economical driving. As it stands, speed bumps are causing drivers to accelerate and decelerate constantly, making a hefty contribution to air pollution - something which kills 25,000 people every year in this country alone.

An end to all speed bumps? Sign us up. But, before you get ahead of yourselves, you may not appreciate all of Nice’s recommendations. It’s advising a drop in the speed limit from 70 to 50mph on certain stretches of motorway, and is calling for more 20mph zones in residential areas. And yes, cameras are likely to be used for enforcement, should the government take heed of Nice’s report.

Elsewhere, Nice also suggests avoiding having cycle paths near busy roads - or using foliage as a screen where it’s unavoidable - and moving living rooms to the rear of houses in polluted areas.

In my town are not many speedbumps. The town just refuses to fix the main street properly. So, that solves the problem somewhat. And there are effin roundabouts everywhere. For reference, my town has around 7k residents, we have 6 roundabouts (3 on main street). But our communal government is a donkey show, no, that’s not fair to donkeys.

I gotta say, I’m somewhat jealous of your roundabout situation. Having so many of them and so few people (assuming less traffic, too) gives you more opportunities to have a little fun. And potholes are just an excuse for some spontaneous slalom action. Always look at the brighter side of things ;)

In the town I live in, speed bumps are really important. This is simply because NOBODY follows the speed limit. Ever. They will drive through a residential area as quickly as they wish, which can pose a serious threat to children or animals. Before there were speed bumps in my neighborhood, it is not uncommon for people to slam the throttle all the way to the dead end, probably measuring 0-60 times.

If you have a racecar, you should be able to do 0-60-0 in between the speedbumps. In fact, having a racecar solves all the other problems, too. Except speedbumps :( racecars don’t like speedbumps

I hate when people tap their brakes for no reason whatsoever
Or when the do a 45-0 mph brake test every time they have a red light
And people who floor their Prius in order to make the red light
Also people who use the A/C all time
If the weather it’s nice out then roll down the windows and save gas
Unless your on the freeway/motorway
Then it reduces mpg

Speed cameras in 20mph zones? James May now has competition. Who will be caught speeding at less than 37mph? 😂

Around where I live, speed bumps rarely go across the entire road.
As a result, they’re more like banked chicanes than actual bumps - no problem

There are 3 speedbumps on my 500m long street near my house. I don’t even bother accelerating beyond the speed which lets me clear the bumps without scraping. Speedbumps be damned
