The amount of money Amazon Prime paid to snare Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May varies greatly depending on which rumour you’re reading, but the general consensus is it was rather a lot. However, it’s looking like the streaming service’s investment in the trio - which includes a huge production budget - is going to pay off.

While no specific figures were given, Amazon Prime has revealed that the first episode garnered the highest viewing figures for any show debut on the platform, beating previous record holder The Man In The High Castle. Not bad considering it hasn’t had a worldwide release yet.

Speaking about the news, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said:

“The guys are back, doing what they do best - the chemistry between Jeremy, Richard, and James is what makes The Grand Tour so entertaining. Their creativity, along with the amazing production quality and 4K HDR streaming, has Prime members responding in a big way. Kudos and congrats to the whole team.”

It’s been well received too, currently holding a 4.8 average star rating on Amazon based on nearly 4500 people, a 9.6 average on IMDB.com and having positive reviews thrown at it from publications the world over.

For me the first episode didn’t quite live up to the hype, and after stating thus I am holed up in a bunker waiting for this whole thing to blow over…

Who’s excited for episode two?
