This V6 Chevrolet Camaro Came Stupidly Close To Beating A Hellcat On Track

There may be a massive power differential between the two muscle cars, but the Camaro gets close to a legendary giant-killing in this Car & Driver test

The Chevrolet Camaro may be powered by a seemingly minuscule 335bhp V6 with less than half the outright grunt of the manic 697bhp Dodge Charger Hellcat, but this track test shows the budget pony car is a force to be reckoned with. It managed a time just half a second off of the Charger’s effort, obliterating its similarly priced rivals.

Taking part in Car And Driver’s annual ‘Lightning Laps’ track battle, the Chevy Camaro set one hell of a time - a 3min 4sec lap that ended up in a class win for the muscle car. Trouncing the likes of the EcoBoost Mustang and the 350Z Track - a past record holder - the Camaro was quicker through certain sectors of the track than an F-Type SVR and the R8 V10. Not bad at all…

Honestly they need to make a Challenger Hellcat T/A that’s stripped out with wider tires and stiffer suspension, because yes, while I love them for their pure obscenity,
neither of the hellcats are track cars by any stretch of imagination. But getting shown up by a V6 Camaro (even though it is very well
designed)? That’s just sad.

Shows that power is nothing without control.

Why wouldn’t you ? Looks better, sounds better and there’s no surprise that there’s more new gen Mustangs and even Challengers than Camaros.

697? Some of the 701 horses died in the track, this explains why the Dodge was running slower
