BMW and Toyota's sports car joint venture looks set to gain Bavarian internal combustion power supplement by electric motors
Toyota Supra Rumour Mill Latest Suggests A BMW Engine With Hybrid Power

With the name recently trademarked, it’s looking increasingly likely that Toyota’s end of a joint sports car venture with BMW will indeed be called the Supra. Naturally, that news sent JDM loving car fans into complete and utter meltdown, but now we’ve had a little time to ruddy well calm down, let’s take a look at what else we can expect.

According to an (admittedly pretty speculative) report in Auto Express, we’re looking at an engine from BMW powering the rear wheels, with Toyota-developed motors powering the fronts via a lithium ion battery. The cells will be fed with juicy regenerative braking, motorsport-style. Also in a Toyota first, the car will also get a dual-clutch gearbox, rather than the firm’s infuriating CVT ‘box.

Interestingly, the report also claims the Toyota sports car will be longer than the BMW Z4 successor, sitting on an elongated version of the same jointly-developed platform. The exterior designs will apparently be completely different too; we’re still hoping that the Supra looks something like the gorgeous FT-1 concept (pictured).

Sick of all the rumours and want Toyota just to reveal the damn thing? You’ll have to be patient: for both the BMW and the Toyota, we’re looking at early 2017.

Adjusted for inflation the new NSX is worth about the same as it was back in the day when it was 90k USD so if this supra is more than $70,000 i’m gonna rage
