Ford released the GT40 in 1964. It wasn’t until 1966 and the launch of the Mk.II, which was an evolution of The british-built cars conceived and constructed by Shelby American, that Ford was actually able to beat Ferrari. They did it by using the “Strength is in numbers” idea. There were 8 Mk.IIs with 427ci engines backed by a fleet of 289ci GT40 Mk.Is . Following the death of Ken Miles in the experimental J-Car that was the quickest at the 1966 Test Day, Ford applied the Nascar-proven Full Rollcage on the Mk.IV which was designed for Le Mans. As such, Ford did not bother to take part in other rounds where they, instead, tossed some older Mk.IIs, albeit in B specification. The Mk.IV only raced at Sebring and Le Mans and it won both. I think that’s the only car ever to win both races it ever started.

I think Audi will get this one although I would like Porsche to win. Their R18 looks quite changed from last year and it was faster than the 919 in the last races. The 919 is so sexy though.(headlights make it look so mean)

I’m still in love with the winner from 1980, the Rondeau M379B.

A private entry built in a back yard powered by an old F1 engine. And it beat Porsche. I’d love to own one some day….

81 through 2015 has been german dominated with the odd year of another manufacturer winning. I still consider the F1 GTR the best win at LeMans considering they werent factory cars and were pretty much road cars which had been stripped.
