Tesla Model 3 Owners Will Be Denied Free Supercharger Access

Tesla Model 3 Owners Will Be Denied Free Supercharger Access

The whole Supercharger deal with Tesla always seemed a bit too good to be true. Free, unlimited charging for life? Really? Well, it turns out it is - to an extent - too good to be true, as it seems Model 3 owners won’t be given the same free, unlimited access as Model S and Model X drivers, despite Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggesting to the contrary in the past.

Venture Beat quotes Musk as saying the following at a recent shareholder meeting:

“To date, we wanted to keep it really straightforward and easy. So that’s why the Superchargers are set up, at least to date for people who bought the cars, as free long-distance for life. Obviously that has, fundamentally, a cost. I don’t want to make this some big news headline, but the obvious thing to do is decouple that from the cost of the Model 3. So it will still be very cheap - and far cheaper than gasoline — to drive long-distance with the Model 3, but it will not be free long distance for life unless you’ve purchased that package.”

While this is a shame, we can see why. With hundreds of thousands of deposits put down for Model 3s, accommodating all of those cars on the Supercharger network - even bearing in mind the rate at which it’s expanding - would have no doubt been very difficult and costly. We’ll have to wait and see just how “very cheap” the access ends up being…

That’s BS I made my deposit after listening to all the promises and features and now they are “backing out”? That’s not fair to people who made the leap of faith.

Well, how about cancelling your order? If the promise is part of your Tesla3-business-case, and it no longer a valid one, cancel it. No shame in that.
But no cancelation means that emotion is part of the deal (‘I wánt the 3’) so the free charging is less of a big deal.
And legally spoken: was it in their contract? Nothing is free but the sun.
Not trying to be a jerk, just my cup of tea..

Well its still an option which you can buy. You are not robbed of any service its just a bit more expensive than , you initially tough. If you do the math maybe the added cost is worth it.

It seems like you will still be able to get free supercharger access for the Model 3 but it will be an optional extra.

I´ll tell them to go socket.

See what I did there? I said socket cause it sounds like suck it, and they´re an electric company, and electric cars use sockets to charge them up. I´m so funny.

Even if it be cheap, expect the shares to plummet after that statement and the preorders to be reduced. Musk should have announced this with the Model 3. Too good to be true.

As a guy who ordered a Model 3 I’m somewhat glad this is happening. Instead of having insane lines at Superchargers most daily commuters will probably buy chargers for the home instead, so people who need to drive long distance can access them without having to wait for others to get out of the way. And considering how many people pre-ordered the load on the Supercharger network can increase SIGNIFICANTLY unless there is some form of limit to it’s use.

Also a thing they should probably do (if they haven’t) is have the autopilot work with an at or over capacity supercharger station to tell when cars are charged and change them out.
