7 Ridiculous Moments Where Spectators Got Too Close To Motorsport Action

The circuit is for race cars and race drivers, but a few spectators seemingly forgot all about that, breaching the barriers and getting a bit too close to the live action

This took place on Silverstone’s Hangar Straight on lap 11 of the race, with a kilt-wearing protestor running towards insanely fast F1 cars with signs saying “read the Bible” and “the Bible is always right”.

We really couldn’t believe this when we saw it. Security at F1 races is usually pretty good but someone managed to sneak onto the Singapore street track during last year’s main event. He was later arrested and sentenced to six weeks in prison.

The Nascar Sprint Cup race at the Richmond International Raceway went under caution for a bizarre reason after a fan climbed the catch fencing and was literally sitting over the track. Apparently he climbed the fence to get a selfie with his favourite driver Kevin Harvick. It’s no surprise he was found guilty of being drunk in public and disorderly conduct, picking up a fine and a year in prison.

A disgruntled ex-Mercedes employee managed to make his way onto the Hockenheimring and ran across one of the longest straights on the track’s old layout during the 2000 F1 race. Information revealed after the incident claimed he had initially tried to protest before the formation lap but was dragged off by marshals.

A man apparently wanted to “try a car” during second practice for the F1 Chinese Grand Prix last year, running across the circuit as cars approached and climbing into the pits before being arrested.

Here’s another brilliant example of some people’s stupidity. These two teenagers drove a VW Polo onto a live race track during a Fun Cup race at Brands Hatch in 2014, much to the dismay of the female sat in the passenger seat. The driver was sentenced to eight months in jail.

Sebastien Buemi was completing a demonstration run in a Red Bull F1 car back in 2011 when a marshal watching the action chose to run across the road at the complete wrong time. Fortunately he was uninjured, but was clearly a dumb move. Look both ways before you cross the road!
