It’s Official: Most People Buy Cars In Stupidly Boring Colours

According to data released by the SMMT, white was the most popular colour for UK new car buyers in 2015, closely followed by black and grey. Can't people make some more interesting choices than that?

Variety - they say - is the spice of life. But try telling that to buyers of new cars in the UK. According to data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) for UK car registrations in 2015, white remained the most popular colour choice for the third year running, this time with a 21.4 per cent market share and an increase of 2.2 per cent compared to 2014.

To make matters worse, the next most popular colours were just as boring - black is in at number two with a 19.4 per cent share, and grey placed third with 15.6 per cent. Combine the lot, and you get 56.4 per cent. Chuck in silver, another dull choice, and you get 67.6 per cent. So, this means the majority of new car buyers go for really boring colours.

The reason is unclear. Perhaps it’s a lack of imagination, something to do with the fact more interesting shades are paid options or maybe it’s concerns about resale value, but whatever the cause it’s frustrating. Particularly when paint technology is so good these days, giving you a wide range of weird and wonderful colours and finishes to choose from.

It’s not all bad news, though. More interesting colours are continuing to rise in popularity. Orange - for instance - only made up 0.7 per cent of cars registered last year, but it’s experienced a 25.7 per cent increase in popularity.

Hopefully this trend will continue, and break up the sea of white, black and grey…

I’m pretty certain it’s because most manufactures don’t offer anything bright or interesting as a standard color.

I can’t say much here but grey is a great colour for some cars. Here’s a pic of my frost covered Mazda 3 in Jindabyne last year

In Australia, we get horrendous paint fade.
White lasts the longest. And can look really good

Different colors cost more money.
The more exotic the color, the more money you’re paying.
You’re buying a 2016 grocery getter chances are you 1) don’t care what color it is and 2) you’re not thinking of resale value 10 years from now.

If a manufacturer offers the “basic” platform for say 23,000 USD then you add on some of the goodies you’re most likely looking at about 25-28,000 USD. Now add on a professional custom paint job to make your car standout from the crowd - now your cars anywhere from 30-35,000 USD depending on the size, and type of paint used, as well as if it’s a color made by the manufacturer. Now you’ve just spent $35,000 on a Honda Odessey.. Are you proud of yourself?
Haha..
Theory at least.. Don’t know exact pricing for paint from a factory my newest vehicle was built 14 years ago so, yeah.
