The Last Ever Land Rover Defender Just Rolled Off The Production Line
It’s been around in one form or another for 68 years, over 2 million have been built, and hundreds of different weird and wonderful variants have been conceived. But since all things must come to an end, so too must production of the long-serving Land Rover Defender, with today being the day the very last one rolled off the production line at Solihull.
This is probably something that should have happened a long time ago - the Defender is a vehicle that’s hopelessly outdated, noisy and challenging to live with - but still, it marks the end of an era, so the fanfare at Solihull today is understandable. What’s particularly interesting about all this is that Land Rover still hasn’t figured out what to replace the thing with - it’ll be intriguing to see what the company can come up with in the next few years.
For now though, all eyes are on that very last model - number 2,016,933 - a Defender 90 in Heritage spec. Looks handsome, no?

The only reason other purpose built off roaders (Toyota Landcruiser 70, etc.) will stay is because of mines. Why didn’t Land Rover get themselves into something like that where they needed to make purpose built off roaders?
The one thing I will say is this. As long as the next model LOOKS fairly similar, I will like it. That’s what people are missing I think. The classic look of the Defender is iconic, and to completely redesign the aesthetics would be a bad move. However, by all means update the technology underneath :D
If it ain’t broken why kill it? One of the best cars ever made, one that didn’t need any marketing to sell. Good luck Landrover with your electronic Discoveries in the future!
