We now know how much the Tesla Model 3 rival from Volvo subsidiary Polestar will cost. It’ll be… significantly more. The Polestar 2 has a UK price of £49,900 (€58,800 in Germany), making it over £12,000 more expensive than the entry-level Model 3.

However, these will be tricked out launch edition cars packing 78kWh battery packs, pitched closer to the Model 3 Long Range. This makes the premium Polestar is charging for its 3-series-sized EV over the 3 a much more palatable £2900.

For £50k, you’re getting a WLTP-certified range of 311 miles, compared to 348 miles in the Tesla. Performance is similar, with the 2’s battery and pair of electric motors developing the equivalent of 404bhp of 487lb ft. 0-62mph happens in 4.7 seconds.

The swanky launch cars come with the comprehensive Pilot Package suite of driver aids fitted as standard, along with the Plus Package. The latter includes stuff like a Harman Kardon sound system, contactless phone charging, fancier headlights and a panoramic sunroof. Polestar will also cover servicing and maintenance for the first three years of ownership.

Anyone interested will need to part with a refundable £1000 deposit. Production begins early 2020, with customer deliveries starting in June 2020.

If you can wait longer, there are less expensive versions of the Polestar 2 inbound.
