Don’t panic about the publish date of this article: despite how far fetched it might sound, there is indeed an all-new Alfa Romeo GTV inbound with as much as 600bhp on tap. FCA first confirmed the return of the GTV nameplate last summer, and now, we’re getting our first look at the car.

A rendering of the new GTV - shown in a presentation - has leaked online, showing most of its curvaceous flanks. It’s as though an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and a Maserati Gran Turismo had a baby.

The car - expected to arrive in 2021 - will be a very different beast to the pretty but patchy GTV of the 90s and early 00s. When making the announcement last June, FCA confirmed the new version will have a 50:50 weight distribution, all-wheel drive, and a 600bhp hybrid powertrain.

We’re thinking power will come from the company’s fruity 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6, with some F1-inspired electric tech pinched from Ferrari. It’ll be based on the same ‘Giorgio’ platform as the Giulia and Stelvio.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, the four-seater coupe will be joined by a new 8C. Unlike the Maserati-derived 8C Competizione launched in 2007, it’ll be mid-engined. There’ll be a carbonfibre monocoque at the hybrid supercar’s core, and plenty of punch - it’ll develop 700bhp, and be capable of hitting 62mph from rest in under three seconds.

Update: Although the GTV is definitely still happening, the render image itself - which has been posted by publications across the world - has inadvertently become something of an April Fool’s - it’s not the real deal. It seems the original source was actually a lecturer of the School of Design, Milan, who posted a series of student projects, one of which was the purported GTV.
