It seems car manufacturers have cottoned on to the fact we’re all getting a bit bored with Nurburgring lap records. Since claiming top production car honours at other tracks isn’t as headline-grabbing, though, Porsche had a trick up its sleeve to attract our attention.

Its first task was to send the 911 GT2 RS around Road Atlanta, in the process clocking a 1:24.88 effort and nabbing the production car lap record from the Dodge Viper ACR. It was a regular GT2, and not the Manthey Racing-fettled version which went faster than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ at the Nurburgring recently, we should note.

Porsche fielded endurance pilot David Donohue and Randy Pobst for the record-hunting exercise, with the latter racing driver claiming the magic time. Rather than go home, however, Porsche decided the GT3 RS should be given a go.

It managed a 1:26.24, a few tenths quicker than the ACR. So now, Porsche can lay claim to the fastest and second-fastest production car laps at the Georgia track.

The lap was recorded and validated by Racelogic using one of its Vbox systems. The cars weren’t quite to factory spec, with both using the “Porsche-approved” ultra-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyre.
