Someone's Already Working On A 2JZ-Powered A90 Toyota Supra

D1 GP Drift legend Daigo Saito will be competing in an A90 Supra this year, complete with a 2JZ-GTE engine

It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? Hopefully silencing all those keyboard warriors who - for some reason - thought it was feasible for Toyota to design, engineer and sell a brand-new powered by a near-30-year-old engine, a 2JZ-powered A90 Supra is actually happening.

The car is being built at D1 GP drifter Daigo Saito’s Fat Five Racing in the Greater Tokyo Area. You might remember a rear-while drive, drift-spec Lamborghini Murcielago from the same brilliantly mad people.

The 2JZ straight-six in question displaces 3352cc and will be good for around 800bhp. Other modifications will include a widebody kit, and inevitably, all the usual drift car accouterments like a hydraulic handbrake and a big increase in steering angle. We’re expecting HKS to have some involvement with the car, the Japanese firm having supplied suspension components and other parts for some of Saito’s previous projects.

We won’t have to wait that long until we see the finished article, either: the car - thought to be the world’s first drift-spec A90 GR Supra - will make its debut at the D1GP All Star Shootout on 23 March in Odaiba, Tokyo.

We’ve no doubt how much it’ll cost to build, but whatever the figure, it’s going to work out better value than a $173,600 A80 Supra.

Switching a fabulous B58 for that antiquity >.<

The worst is that Saito will only go for like 700whp when the BMW motor can already put around 550whp (no PI nor meth) on stock internals with ease..and the 2JZ will certainly bring more lag on the table.

It will make jdm fanboys wet their pants but I don’t really see it as clear winning situation :/

I’m sorry, but as a person that hates the A80 but loves the A90, this is sacrilege..
