The products of Mitsuoka can be diplomatically described as an acquired taste. Some people might attribute different, somewhat stronger words to the quirky and often downright bizarre coachbuilt creations the Japanese firm comes up with.

But Mitsuoka’s latest effort should have quite a bit more mass appeal, because, well… just look at it. Isn’t it a fabulous little thing? It’s called the Rockstar, and it’s a current-generation ‘ND’ Mazda MX-5 that has been turned into a miniature C2 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray replica. We want one. And we suspect you do too.

It’s a fairly comprehensive transformation, with the doors, windscreen and the sill panel being the only original MX-5 bits we can spot. You can have it finished in one of six ‘Murican-themed colours, with Los Angeles Blue, Chicago Red, New York Black, Cisco Orange, Washington White and Arizona Yellow on the menu. We’re struggling to decide which we’d pick. The idea of being stinkingly rich enough to have one of each is certainly appealing.

You’ll need a decent stash of cash to buy just one: the entry-level ‘S’ version is 4,688,200 yen - about £31,500 - while the ‘S Special Package’ is 4,938,000 as a manual, and 5,183,600 as an auto (£33,300, and £35,000). Much more than a standard MX-5, but for something that looks like this, that still seems like decent value.

Of course, if you have a lot of money to burn through, there’s always the option of importing one and then giving Flyin’ Miata a call to arrange one of those LS3 V8 conversions…

The body itself looks amazing. What it needs is to get rid of the original MX-5 wheels with American Racing wheels or Chevrolet Rally wheels, and rework the interior to feel more retro, like more chrome lining and leather.

This is amazing because I own a C2 corvette and I love the Miata so this is the best of both worlds
