Common Problems With The 1st Gen Focus

Here are some common issues to be aware of for the 1st generation (98-04) Focus:

Alternator
Some alternators had the problem of shorting out, causing potential electrical fires

Oil Cap
The oil cap can work loose on these cars, causing oil to drip onto the heat shield and burn

Loss of engine power
There were problems with the powertrain control module software, which could cause the engine to cut out

Automatic Transmission Problems
There were some issues with the crank positioning sensors which caused engines to cut out with cars equipped with automatic transmissions

Brake Hoses
02 Models had an issue where brake hoses were in a position to rub which could cause brake system failure. This should be checked.

Automatic Shifters
There is a locking solenoid in the automatic shifters that tend to go bad at one point or another during the life of the car. Chances are by now, it’s probably been replaced, but it’s something to be aware of.

Rust
Rust is an issue with any older car, but the first signs like to pop up under the plastic sideskirts on these cars. Be wary. It’s important to always check underneath the car, in the fenders, and around the windshield as these are common locations for rust.

Thermostat Housings
For some reason, Ford made these things really poorly, and they have a bad tendency to crack or break. Usually, this happens at or before 100k miles, so it’s just something to be aware of.

is there any solution to fix the loss on engine power? i’m experiencing some problems with my 1.6 zetec, sometimes, when i lift off the throttle the car would keep pulling slightly (like the throttle is stuck a bit), and also sometimes, my instruments just go insane and the speedometer shuts off completely and the car starts shaking when i apply a small amount of throttle, but it stops shaking when i give it more power, but the speedometer is still off…oh and also, i have no idea why is my car soooo thirsty, i can barely get a lower fuel consumption than 10l/100km and the car always feels like it’s down on power, it used to pull harder some time ago than it does now
