I’ve never touched it, from what I heard it’s kinda the middle between the 3E-E and the 5E-FTE. The 3E being one of the worst in the E series, having no power and burning oil like your grandfather burns smoke. The 5E-FTE being the best in the E series, having enough power to pass people on the highway too. Overall, the E series are known to be unkillable, but have nothing to kill.
Not going to win any races.. but they are rock solid reliable.. The 3EFTE is a rocket and rock solid reliable.. They are capable of 180HP with stock internals reliable.. Which is killer for a 1.3ltr engine..
Had one in a Toyota Starlet. Seemed pretty un-burstable but gutless in standard form. 16 valves operated from single overhead cam and rockers I seem to remember. It’s a shame the rest of the Starlet (1998 Solida model) was a wobbly bad handling pile of nastyness.
I have one in my 1996 toyota starlet reflect x (new zealand)
