They were great little cars.. They were however built when ford just started to get better.. and most people didn’t pay attention to them, since they were cheap, and American 4Cyl at the time were pretty terrible.. But the little escorts of the time were pretty darn impressive..
A company i worked for had a wagon version with a stick and it was actually a really nice car.. was super impressed..
Believe it or not, one of the Escort aftermarket’s most popular mods is converting a stock Escort wagon to a GT wagon!
my dad had one of those up until I was 6 or 7 but he sold it because it sat in the driveway or in the mechanics too much (he is a truck driver, so it wouldn’t see a lot of km’s). From what I remember it had some good acceleration, but like the foxbody’s of the time it was terrible for rust around the rear windows and above/in the wheel wells.
Is the XR3i good? They are very cheap.

These are pretty much identical to the Australian Ford Laser TX3! Mazda 1.8L turbo and AWD, just a different front end
From my knowledge of Australian cars, it probably has more horsepower.
A friend of mine used to have an Escort GT with the 5 speed, and it was insanely fun to drive and attack corners with. You know the saying that goes slow cars are fun to drive fast…

The Escort ZX2 did a nice job at continuing where the GT left off.
IMHO, the GT was less bloated looking, but the ZX2 still has its pros!
