New BMW M5 Stars In Fresh Need For Speed Payback Trailer And Gameplay Footage

The all-new, all-wheel drive M5 can be seen strutting its virtual stuff in these new NFS Payback videos

Car manufacturers are paying a lot more attention to video games these days. When Porsche allowed the 911 GT2 RS to make its debut as the Forza Motorsport 7 cover star several weeks before the car’s proper reveal, it struck us as a watershed moment, and the new BMW M5 has gone a similar way.

It made an (admittedly less conspicuous) debut on the cover of Need For Speed Payback a few months ago, something which surely had to have been okayed by BMW big-wigs. The Bavarian manufacturer went a step further to have the full reveal of the car this week, neatly coinciding with Cologne’s Gamescon.

The car stars in an all-new trailer revealed for the event (above), and was available for players to sample in the game (below).

“While the M5 won’t be officially released until next spring, Need for Speed players can drive it first and exclusively in Need for Speed Payback,” BMW M boss Frank van Meel said, Adding: “We at BMW M are really proud of this collaboration.”

We’re not sure gamers are going to learn much about the new car though - it’s not hard to tell from the in-game footage that Payback exhibits the kind of classic arcade handling we’ve come to know from the Need For Speed franchise. And no, the real M5 won’t have a boost function that sees blue flames spit out of the exhaust. At least not as standard…

The car looks great in brown though, right?

Technically, that’s a ‘First Edition’ M5. Limited to 400 units worldwide and comes in ‘Frozen Dark Red Metallic’ only as stated by BMW.

The more you know. :P

The Rhino hitting cop cars to catch a criminal, just the way a GTA Vice City ambulance hits 20 people to save one.

BMW has had a pretty good relationship with NFS over the past years, so I kinda get why they chose to put their car in NFS Payback (I mean look at Most Wanted and NFS 2015)
