I think I saw that in Road & Track years ago, but only for the exhaust system. It has something to do with the speed of sound waves. I remember seeing a book called “The Scientific Design of Intake and Exhaust Systems” by Philip H. Smith somewhere back in the late 60’s or early 70s.
