The Iconic Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 ''Calsonic''

After fielding a very successful racing effort in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Nissan de-emphasized racing as a result of the 1973-4 fuel scare. But in 1989, Nissan wanted a new car for Group A racing overseas and the domestic All Japan Touring Car Championship, so it created the third-gen (R32) Skyline GT-R.

The R32 was a serious machine with a 2.6- or 2.8-liter twin-turbo dohc straight-6 sending considerable horsepower through a manual gearbox to all-wheel-drive. In the All Japan Touring Car Championship, the Group A R32 Skylines were undefeated for four consecutive racing seasons, totaling 29 races.

The 1990 R32 Skyline GT-R race car shown here has the famous Calsonic branding, and is arguably the most iconic R32 Skyline in existence. This very car was the overall champion in two of the four All Japan Touring Car Championships in which the Skylines were dominant. It is the car that helped cement the Skyline’s competition and performance legacy.
