There are two characteristics that exist in every hardcore car gamer: a passion for racing and an exquisite ability to point out a game’s flaws. The team at Mini Pixel Interactive Studios is extremely passionate about racing games, and building a game that improves upon the imperfections of others is how it plans to create RTR. The game will come first to Android and iOS, but with crowdfunding it will likely expand to Xbox One and PS4. The images on this page are an exclusive look at some of its designs during the early stages of development, and we will bring you more as the game progresses.

Mini Pixel Interactive Studios was formed just six months ago to create Real Track Racing as its first game. The team is currently made of 12 people who have worked on various car game development teams. Some of the crew have many years of experience working with Unreal Engine, Unity3D and CryENGINE. Others have been a part of past projects such as The Crew and the Need For Speed franchise. All of the team members, though, are petrolheads. We talked to Cameron Kiddle of Mini Pixel Interactive Studios who told us they often travel to major automotive events to check out the technology and styling of the new cars. They enjoy racing, and have even spent the whole day playing Forza. Good career choice, right?

The Idea Is Born

We asked Cameron a few more questions about the game, and he was happy to provide us with more info.

CT: How was the idea born to start creating this game?

Cameron: We all play the AAA racing games such as Forza Horizon 2 and DriveClub but we all agree they all could be a lot better. We want to have a game that the community will enjoy and not lose interest in. Also we want people to know that we are here for the passion and the community not for the money.

This lead to Real Track Racing being born because all current big racing franchises (as with any other game franchises) have their games rushed to meet early deadlines set by the publisher e.g. EA. This reduces that quality of a game and the content available. We want to create a game where nothing is rushed and all the features and content that the community wants is there with no bugs to be found.

Beating The Competition

CT: What areas did you focus on to improve that you saw as a weaknesses in racing games (mobile or others)?

Cameron: We have spent weeks playing the top racing games currently coming to several conclusions on what now will be in the game. The first of the weaknesses in current racing games is the weather systems. RTR will have a dynamic weather and time system…Rain will cause puddle formations on the ground and will affect the driving line. Rain will be joined by other weather conditions such as thunderstorms, mist/fog, snow, sleet, ice. The wind will also be a factor, with the wind direction affecting the movements of the cars, flags, trees, leaves, dust, and other conditions and objects surrounding the track.

Endurance races will be a step above others in terms of mechanics. The player will have to take into account tyre wear and fuel consumption; these will result in the use of strategic pit stops. Another standout feature is that in a pit stop you can save the game and continue another time or even swap with another driver to continue the race.

Another area that has been missed is the online marketplace. RTR has one called ‘Auction Area’, where you can sell, bid or buy. On the marketplace there will be decals/paints, tunes/setups and cars. If you are playing offline you can quickly sell your car in exchange for instant money.

For years the quality of the crowds in racing game has been terrible and we will change that. The crowds will cheer on the cars when they cross the finish line. Also, they will move away from the track edges when there is a car incoming. When it starts to rain they will put up their umbrellas. More of these crowd actions will be added.

Game Modes

CT: What game modes are coming in the initial release?

Cameron: We have focused massively on the game modes choosing the originals and then throwing in some new ones as well. The full offline/online list is below:

Offline:
- Classic Career - take part in over 1000 events, each filled with adrenaline-pumping action.
- Drag Racing - choose ⅛, ¼, ½ or the full one-mile and battle against other opponents.
- Head 2 Head - race against an opponent with similar abilities and car level in a one-lap sprint.
- Time Trial - race against the clock to beat a set time by a car of the same level.
- Multi-Type Racing - take part in two car type racing. While your car type’s race is going, another car type’s race will be going on at the same time.

Online:
- Online Career - continue your Classic Career progress but with real players instead of the CPU against you.
- Drag Racing - choose ⅛, ¼, ½ or the full one-mile and battle against up to eight other opponents.
- Head 2 Head - race online against a chosen opponent with similar abilities and car level in a one-lap sprint.
- Multi-Type Racing - take part in two car type racing. While your car type’s race is going, another car type’s race will be going on at the same time.
- Drift Attack - drift with other players around the track and the winner is the person with the most drift points.
- Drift Free Time - drift with other players around the track with no time limits so take this as a drift ‘get together’.

More will be added in the coming months.

Cars & Tracks

The quality of the cars is something to admire. Each is made of over three million polys, compared to the average 1.2 million polys for each car in Forza Horizon 2 and Project CARS. Polys are the individual shapes that are manipulated to form a wire frame model that makes the shape of a 3D object. The more polys used in an object, the more precise its form, especially curves. There will be over 300 cars in RTR, with plenty of upgrades for each, making it the largest selection of cars in a game of this genre. A variety of production cars including the Hummer H1, Lamborghini Aventador and BMW M4 will be included, as well as concept cars like the Toyota FT-1 and Kia GT4 Stinger.

Cameron said the track selection was a crucial part of designing the game. The team chose to include some popular tracks like Yas Marina, Circuit de Monaco, Ebisu (drift) Circuit and Silverstone. They also included some incredible driving roads like Hana Highway, The Atlantic Road, Mazda Turnpike, the Transfăgărășan Highway and the Stelvio Pass. The goal is to produce 40 to 50 high quality tracks, not including any future DLCs with tracks.
