7 Reasons Not To Buy The 2016 Subaru WRX STI

It’s obvious that I love this car, I’ve owned a 2014 STI for 2 years now, but the vehicle does have its drawbacks. Here’s seven reasons you might want to put your money elsewhere.

So what you’re telling me is my 2013 hatch is better than my roommate’s 2016 that he just got last weekend. Excuse me as I send him this video because I am a terrible person.

Haha not necessarily better, but I do wish they offered a hatch. The interior and steering are major improvements, and it’s a more rigid design.

The colour is great!
But it doesn’t really work on that car

Reminds of the “grabber blue” that was an option with the S197 Mustang. Doesn’t really suit the Subie, look better in the Stang

You basically described how it felt to own my 09 Impreza.
It’s noisy, very very noisy (my 87 VW is quieter and more refined) , the fuel economy was a pitiful joke, there’s no power until you get past 3500rpm, and despite mine not having a turbo (just a plain Jane Impreza base model), there’s throttle input lag because of that STUPID drive by wire gas pedal.
It’s nice to know Subaru literally changed nothing in 7 years.
It also solidifies the fact that I REALLY want a Focus RS.

Drive by wire actually enable the engine to have better throttle response, but a lot of lower end cars have a little delay in them to make them easier for subhumans (non-car people) to drive.

I’m not sure on the prices elsewhere in the world, but in the UK the WRX-STi is the same price as a Mustang EcoBoost, Audi S3 and Golf-R and more expensive than a 370Z. So it has plenty of competition to choose from even if the Lancer is now MIA.

I like that you feel the same way about the wrx. The sti is nearly $10k more expensive, but it’s not that much better. And if you want a good track car, 10 grand will buy you a lot of nice mods.

Twin scroll turbos are NOT new tech. Twinscroll VF36 and VF37 models have been around since the late 90’s. The hatchback STi’s didn’t sell very well which is why the coupes were phased out at the end of 2001. Worldwide market appeal not just the US market. Comparing the STI sedan to the STi wagon is like complaining that you can’t load mulch in the back of your Outback like you could in your Baja. In terms of the rear wing, you can get one with a smaller wing, just saw one the other day, why didn’t you mention that? Otherwise some pretty decent points.

Twinscroll is new tech for the US market, a lot of stuff Subaru has been doing since the 90s never reached our shores until much later.

The USA has always been behind with engine technology. GM and Ford used engines from the 70s and 80s all the way to the mid 2000s, for example. Twin scroll turbos would be considered pretty new tech since its only recently that the USA has moved away from large displacement engines.

Heh I just traded my 2013 STi hatch for a 2016 FXT for this reason, more room, better economy and cheaper on the pocket + FA20DIT engine and better mpg.
