VW VR6 Camshaft position sensor issue/misfire

I have had a reoccurring cam position sensor fault since I bought my mk3 vr6 golf with no issues then last week, car began to run rough on the way home like the timing is off. Checked spark plugs, wires and coilpack. No spark at the coil on the prong for cylinder 1 & 6 which share the same housing, went and replaced the coilpack with a new ICM and still hasn’t resolved the issue. Wiring looks good to all sensors and back to the engine control unit, the car still turns over so it can’t be the crank sensor. The only thing I can think of is the Camshaft sensor has finally given up all together or possibly I’ve stripped something in the timing chain.
Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Thanks!

Are you able to get any engine management codes? Or is this pre OBDII?

Hmm tricky without codes…could be playing parts bingo till you get it right! I know some more modern VWs and cars in general have a check between the cam and crank sensors so if either jumps a tooth, or one of the sensor goes out, it puts the correlation between the 2 out and it flags a code and normally a light.
Have you changed the plugs themselves? Also maybe check the gap on the plugs that aren’t firing? Too big and they won’t spark

Yeah exactly, i was hoping it would be a bit more helpful in indicating where the problem is coming from. From what ive read up so far that no start would indicate the crank and rough running and idle would be the cam, so i more inclined to think it is the latter.
Yep fresh plugs, im not worried about the wires either as i swapped them over to other cylinders and the fault didnt migrate

Did you just replace the ICM or the whole coilpack?

The icm comes with coilpack, so its brand new, unless its inbuilt into the pcm, but im pretty sure it sits ontop of the coilpack
