Remember the BMW M4 DTM Champion Editions? The first came in 2014 to celebrate BMW’s DTM series win that year, and was made just 23 times. The second came at the end of 2016 after another DTM championship was wrapped up, this time in greater numbers: 200, to be exact.

One of that second group of cars features in this video. It’s the more powerful of the two specials, with 493bhp and 443lb ft of muscle. It uses the same water injection tech as the slightly unhinged M4 GTS and is, well, a bit quick.

Facing off against it in this unlikely clash is a Mercedes-AMG GT R. It’s way more powerful thanks to a twin-turbo, 577bhp V8, but it’s also carrying 120kg more; the same as two thin passengers.

Dodgy calibration of the GT R’s frenetic launch control costs it time in the first phase of the race. But can it haul back the distance in just a quarter of a mile? The video above has the answer.
