This Mitsubishi Galant Is An Ultra-Rare, AMG-Tuned, 8000rpm JDM Hero

These days AMG is owned by Mercedes-Benz, but several decades ago it was independent and could work with whoever it wanted. This Mitsubishi Galant is the AMG that flies beneath almost every radar

You probably think you know what AMG is about, and for anything bearing the famous three letters since the turn of the millennium, you’re probably right. Wind the clock back even further, though, and you get this.

A barely-known project for Mitsubishi produced a limited run of front-wheel drive, 1220kg Galant saloons for 1991. They had high-compression pistons, titanium valve springs, hollow rockers and a special intake that swirled the air more for fuller combustion. Normally aspirated, it produced around 170bhp, spun to 8000rpm and probably still sounds fantastic at full chat.

Facts are scant on the super-rare animal, but rumour has it that the AMG tuning homologated the Galant for racing series that the turbocharged VR4, fettled by Ralliart, wasn’t eligible for. Sit back and enjoy this video from Pacific Coast Auto.
