Ferrari Is Building A More Hardcore 488 'GTO' With 700bhp

According to reports, the flagship 488 could wear Ferrari's most prestigious performance badge as it goes after the bonkers-fast Porsche 911 GT2 and McLaren 720S

Ferrari is not happy about the sheer speed of the Porsche 911 GT2. Not happy at all. That’s good news for the automotive world, though, because the Italians have resolved to make their 488 supercar much more aggressive.

The angry new addition is potentially going to be called the 488 GTO, which would make it just the fourth Ferrari ever to wear the extremely special badge. If the company stops short of that honour the car will use a name in the same vein as Challenge Stradale, Scuderia and Speciale.

Target power is a beefy 700bhp, with torque getting a big boost as well. The interior will be stripped of anything superfluous, the glass will be thinned and the brakes, inside weight-saving forged alloys, will be chopped-in for lighter carbon-ceramic ones.

Autocar predicts a kerb weight of less than 1400kg, with a 0-62mph time of about 2.7 seconds and a 0-124mph charge in just 7.5 seconds. The McLaren 720S does it in 7.8 seconds as standard, while the GT2 takes 8.3.

New bodywork should add even more functional downforce on top of the regular car’s 325kg, which means, much like the totally single-minded McLaren Senna, the hardcore 488 might not be quite the looker that its softer brother is.

Prices of over £215,000 are looking likely, but much could depend on the car’s ability to snatch back a few points in the speed and lap time arguments. After all, being the fastest does seem to matter to Ferrari. A lot.
