As is often the case with Motor Trend Head 2 Head battles, there’s one particular detail of this Mazda MX-5 RF vs Toyota 86 showdown that stands out. And that’s the moment Jonny Lieberman tries (and spectacularly fails) to beat both the lap times for those cars, in a 697bhp Dodge Charger Hellcat.
It has the power of two pairs of the cars he’s trying to beat, but the tail-happy Charger Hellcat is not a happy beast on a track. Granted, the Toyota/Mazda lap times were set by the extremely handy Randy Pobst, but that doesn’t make the gulf between them (we won’t spoil the result) any less hilarious.
Does this make me want a Hellcat any less? Nope.

Lol let’s put cars head to head that a designed for completely different things…. a Miata is like 16 second qm car…… it does 0-60 in like 6 seconds…
Just in case there is confusion, its the hellcat driver who lost to Randy not the hellcat that lost to the mx5 gt86. He couldn’t drive at all and its also because the hellcat is not as easy to drive as the mx5 and gt86. What would have been a good and interesting comparison is to put that driver in the mx5 or gt86 and then the same guy in the hellcat to show how close it really is since the hellcat is not as easy to drive. We all know that if randy drove the hellcat he would be faster than in the mx5 and gt86.
This mostly proves Johnny is slower than Randy. They even talk about how he can’t stay on the racing line…. Common Head 2 Head! Why didn’t you have Randy drive the damn Hellcat? Car guys know Apples to Oranges when we see it. If you want to prove an underpowered sports car is faster you gotta give muscle a fair shot.
Cause I drive on a race track all day every day… gimme the powaaaaaaeeeerrrr!
So American muscle cars still can’t turn. I’ll stick with little roadsters thanks.
And thats the reason why old beetles beat opponents with more than double the power in Rally Cross.
