Here's A Demonstration Of Why Your Old Sports Car Needs A Suspension Upgrade

The 18-year-old suspension components on this 996 Porsche 911 were holding it back, so it's unsurprising to see just how much difference new coilovers, bushes and anti-roll bars made

Time is not kind to your suspension components. Over the years, bushes will perish, springs will weaken and shock absorbers will degrade. So if you’re running something like this 18-year-old 996 Porsche 911, you should think about giving your suspension a refresh, and maybe even a little upgrade while you’re at it.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that suspension technology has come a long way over the last few decades, and performance cars of yesteryear were on the whole a lot softer. In the case of the 996 - as mentioned in the above video - it was set up to understeer on the limit to make it a little less lairy to drive than its predecessors. So, it’s no surprise that an overhaul featuring things like Ohlins Road and Track dampers makes a massive difference to the way it drives.

My dad’s 996 seems to hold up nicely but I haven’t really had a good comparison so idk

The Astraman

True true…I was delivering 2 litre e36 Beamers a bad day on the track with my koni equipped 1.6 astra despite lacking straight line speed.

Which Koni’s do you have installed? I’ve been looking at the yellows or the FSD’s for my Volvo. Either that or a KYB “Just a Gas” just because its cheaper.

This was a great video. You went all out and all at one time. I have made similar changes but used original Porsche parts and did not change all the links and none of the springs. I used Bilsteins struts. All that made a big difference, but I have not really tested it. It has always been fun to drive. I dont get to see my car so i enjoy watching videos of other 996s. Thank you. Dont forget to clean your radiator
